CapitaSpring

Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group in collaboration with Carlo Ratti Associati, CapitaSpring is a mixed-used commercial building consisting of offices, services apartments, and other public spaces that include two gardens and an observatory deck. At 280-meters, it is one of the tallest building in Singapore and it grabbed many people’s attention upon its completion.

The lighting design is done by Nipek, a Singapore-based lighting design firm. According to Nipek,  “The lighting is designed to respond to the architecture, landscape elements and function by carefully selecting the type of light fixtures and the colour of the light”.

As you enter the main office lobby, you immediately register the high ceiling space. One would think that you would need lots of light fixtures to light such a space. But with our Parscan and Atrium Double Focus series, you can achieve more light with less luminaires, keeping the ceiling appearance minimal and clean while achieving the required lux levels on the targeted surfaces.

The sheer volume of the 18 meters high space was further emphasised by highlighting the cladded walls evenly with Atrium Double-focus wall washer downlights. Lightgap grazing light was used on the accent wall to bring out the gorgeous red travetine walls. Parscan 48V spotlights were used to create light carpets at the entrances, reception counter, lift lobby, and security gantry to guide orientation through contrast in brightness. Even with the high ceiling space, our Parscan provides enough light for the face recognition gantry. With all these in place, the ceiling remains clean, neat and minimal.

The drive up to the carpark is a very visually comfortable experience. The optical cut-off angle of our SKIM downlights means you will not be affected by any glare from the light as you drive up the slope into the carpark. Our SKIM downlights are enclosed in a customised housing to house the emergency lights, and the uniform lighting in the carpark creates a visually comfortable, well-lit space.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Singapore government agency responsible for urban development, required that the lighting at the car parks on the podium levels would not negatively affect the visibility of the building façade at night. Thus, the Skim downlights that are installed amoung the façade are shielded on one side, and are not visible from street level outside to maximise glare control.

The greenery visible through the opening in the façade are highlighted in green and warm white lighting to create a “green pocket”, an iconic element of the building's design, and the glare free light also means that the “green pockets” of the façade remains a stunning feature at night.

The Sky Garden Singapore's tallest publicly accessible observatory deck. The 51st floor observatory deck offers a panoramic view of Marina Bay and also doubles as Singapore’s highest urban farm that produces fresh produce to restaurants. Lighting here is kept at a low level to not disturb the viewer's perspective of the city’s night scape and to reduce light pollution. To keep the continuity from the carpark level façade, there are pockets at the rooftop façade where the trees are highlighted. Our Tesis in-ground luminaire are used to illuminate the trees and facilitate orientation in the Sky Garden.

CapitaSpring has achieved Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark Platinum, the highest sustainability rating in Singapore, and the BCA Universal Design Mark GoldPLUS Award for its landscaping. It also won Merit in the 2022 SEMEC Award for Commercial & Industry, Silver in the 2022 MIPIM Asia Awards for Best Mixed-Use Development, and Design of the Year for 2023 President*s Design Award.
