The Evolution of Dover Street: A Legacy of Light and Innovation
The building at 38 Dover Street, London, has an illustrious history spanning over two centuries, reflecting the artistic and industrial evolution of the UK. From the early 1800s, when it was home to Lord King, to its transformation into a vibrant hub of portraiture, engineering, and craftsmanship, Dover Street has been a witness to the changing face of London’s creative industries.
In the early 1900s, the building became known for theatrical portraiture as the Dover Street Studios Ltd, a leading photography studio specialising in capturing the glamour of stage performers. Dover Street Studios took over assets from the renowned Biograph Studios and Adart, expanding their portfolio to include iconic photographic advertisements for brands like Pears' Soap. This artistic legacy continued with Bassano Court Photographer from 1920 to 1938, cementing Dover Street’s reputation as a center for high-quality portraiture.
The late 20th century brought a new era as the building transitioned into a bespoke shoemaking workshop under Alan McAfee, before finding its current purpose as the headquarters of ERCO Lighting Ltd in 1979. ERCO brought a different kind of artistry to Dover Street—the art of light. Originally focusing on incandescent and halogen lighting solutions, ERCO evolved alongside advancements in lighting technology, pioneering high-efficiency LED systems that align with modern sustainability goals.
Today, ERCO’s Dover Street team has illuminated some of the UK’s most prestigious institutions and architectural spaces. Their projects include sophisticated lighting designs for the National Portrait Gallery, Zaha Hadid Architects Offices, British Museum, Millfield School, University of Bath, and the National Maritime Museum. Each project reflects ERCO’s commitment to precision, energy efficiency, and visual comfort, highlighting the importance of light as both a functional and artistic element.
From portraits to precision lighting, Dover Street has continuously adapted to the artistic demands of each era, making it a landmark of both historical and contemporary significance. As ERCO continues to innovate in lighting, the legacy of Dover Street remains one of continuous reinvention—always at the forefront of aesthetic and technological advancements.
