The campus of media company British Sky Broadcasting (BSKYB) is located in Isleworth, an area populated by wildlife. Thus, the lighting concept for the outdoor space had to be designed to avoid light having any negative effects on the local animal population. At the same time, the new lighting should enable BSKYB employees and visitors to reliably find their way around the campus without the effects of glare.

The lighting concept by Arup Lighting London was primarily intended to meet the requirements for “Dark Sky”. ERCO Castor bollard luminaires were thus installed. Thanks to sophisticated lens technology, the distribution of light is extremely precise and light emission above the horizontal plane is prevented. In this way the lighting designers ensured that no unwanted light radiates onto trees where birds might nest.

Furthermore, the lighting should only be switched on when needed, which is the case in certain areas during darkness, but in other more wildlife-sensitive areas only when people are moving on paths. To meet this challenge, ERCO designed a number of variants of the Castor bollard luminaire with hybrid PIR presence detectors and daylight sensors. These were intelligently integrated into the corpus with the luminaires either at the beginning or end of each path.

Another key criterion as to why the lighting designers chose Castor was their highly asymmetric distribution of light. This reduced the number of luminaires required to a minimum – spacing of up to 33 ft. (10m) with 1 lux was possible between the bollards. This was an exceedingly efficient factor regarding overall energy consumption and installation costs.
