The Sint-Janshospitaal in Bruges is one of the oldest preserved hospital buildings in Europe. This impressive historical structure, now functioning as a museum, houses masterpieces by Hans Memling as well as contemporary works of art. It draws art enthusiasts from around the world, who are equally captivated by its remarkable architecture and rich history. One of the key features of the Sint-Janshospitaal is its high ceilings, which presented a unique challenge for the lighting design. As drilling into the old beams was not an option, a special solution was devised to safely and effectively mount the lighting on the ceilings. By installing ERCO’s track system on the ceiling, the team was able to ensure optimal lighting angles.
The ceiling heights in this historic building vary between 2.18m and 11m, so Parscan spotlights with identical beam angles and adaptable controls were selected to accommodate the different heights. The exceptional glare control allows even very large paintings to be illuminated from high ceilings without any reflections, which was crucial for creating a pleasant visual environment.
Another important aspect of the lighting concept was its adaptability for visitors. The system facilitates a smooth transition for visitors moving from brighter areas to exhibition spaces with lower lighting levels, making it easier for them to adjust visually. This greatly enhances the overall experience, particularly for older visitors who may need more time to acclimatize to lower light conditions.
Although the current exhibition setup is designed for a lifespan of 8-10 years, additional tracks were installed beyond the immediate requirements to ensure future flexibility in lighting adjustments. The result is a transformation from simple to sophisticated lighting that truly brings the objects and exhibits to life. ERCO’s use of innovative technologies and extensive experience in museum lighting ensures that both the presentation and preservation of the exhibits are held to the highest standards. This approach makes every exhibition an unforgettable experience for visitors while maintaining the integrity of the artworks and historical artefacts.
