The Asia World-Expo in Hong Kong stands as a prominent venue, hosting a diverse range of international events. Its East Entrance Lobby, a vast space with a soaring height of more than 10-meter-high ceiling and a striking glass facade, presented a unique lighting challenge. The architectural vision, conceived by Ronald Lu & Partners, called for a space that exuded a welcoming grandeur, transforming into a luminous beacon at night. This vision was brilliantly realized through the expertise of lighting designers Mr. Chris Mok and Simpson Ng from Spectrum Design & Associates (Asia), who chose ERCO to illuminate this iconic space.
The primary objective was to create a lighting solution that would not only illuminate the expansive lobby with exceptional uniformity but also accentuate its architectural features. The glass facade, a defining characteristic of the lobby, demanded a lighting approach that would complement its transparency while preventing glare and light pollution. Furthermore, the sheer height of the ceiling required luminaires that could deliver powerful illumination without compromising on energy efficiency.
ERCO's Kona floodlights (72W), with a 4000K color temperature, emerged as the ideal solution. These luminaires, typically used for outdoor applications, were ingeniously repurposed as Downlights, demonstrating the versatility and adaptability of ERCO's products. The Kona floodlights, with their exceptional glare control and wide flood distribution, proved to be perfectly suited for the task. They bathed the lobby in a uniform, flicker-free light, creating a welcoming and visually comfortable environment for visitors.
The result is a breathtaking transformation. During the day, the lobby is bathed in natural light, complemented by the subtle yet effective illumination of the Kona floodlights. As night falls, the lobby takes on a different persona. The glass facade transforms into a giant, glowing light box, visible from afar, creating a captivating spectacle. The Kona floodlights, now the primary light source, cast a warm and inviting glow, highlighting the architectural details and creating a sense of grandeur.
The success of this project lies in the seamless integration of lighting design and architectural vision. The collaboration between Ronald Lu & Partners, Spectrum Design & Associates, and ERCO resulted in a space that is not only functional but also aesthetically stunning. The Asia World-Expo's East Entrance Lobby now stands as a testament to the power of innovative lighting solutions, showcasing how ERCO's high-quality luminaires can be used to create truly transformative spaces. The use of an outdoor luminaire as a Downlight, a testament to the ingenuity of the lighting designers, further underscores the versatility and potential of ERCO's products.
