Illuminating functional areas in rooms

Interior space with illuminated functional zones.

Individual functional areas in spaces such as circulation areas, recreation zones and exhibition areas can be highlighted by light. Zoned lighting with delimited light beams visually separates areas from each another. Differing Illuminance levels form a hierarchy of perception and guide the eye. Different light colors also create contrasts and emphasize individual functional areas.

Functional areas, also called functional zones, are areas in a room, interior space or outdoor area that have special lighting requirements according to their use. Examples:

  • Work areas

  • Circulation areas or routes

  • Recreation zones

  • Exhibition areas

Large, very uniformly illuminated areas can have a monotonous appearance if they are not structured. Also, the energy requirements for lighting are higher, as the most strongly lit area is usually the reference for the entire room. Instead, the nuanced lighting of functional zones structures the space, and thus not only improves orientation. Precise light beams and strong contrasts in brightness allow spatial areas to be delineated from each another. Strong contrasts between the individual zones and their surroundings detach these zones from their spatial context. Low general lighting and the associated low energy requirements are the starting point for setting accents. Using lighting control systems such as Casambi Bluetooth or DALI, the brightness of the functional zones can be perfectly balanced and adapted to different uses. Zoned lighting increases levels of attention and safety along circulation routes or in work areas.
