The juxtaposition of ambient lighting and dedicated lighting concepts shows the full extent of architectural lighting. In addition to providing the basic requirements for vision, this also encompasses highly individual lighting solutions, starting from functional to atmospheric considerations. While the number of possible variations for ambient lighting is relatively small, countless approaches are available to interpret the space using dedicated lighting designs.

Luminaires in the indoor and outdoor areas enable fine graduations to be made in perspective between foreground, middle ground and background. Directed accent light provides a basis to emphasise specific zones. Wallwashers and floodlights complement the ambient lighting allowing contrasts to be created between bright vertical and horizontal surfaces. Luminous objects on tables and projected light are used to create decorative and eye-catching features.

The wide-beam illumination of floor and walls using downlights and wallwashers produces a diffuse light indoors, creating an ambient luminescence that brings a unity to the room. Thoroughfares, tables and seating arrangements in the foreground all receive similar emphasis. The room gives a tranquil impression.

Dedicated lighting concepts can come about in various ways. The different variations shown above demonstrate, for instance, how areas can be emphasised using uniform and accentuated lighting, brightness contrasts or the spatial distribution between foreground and background. At the same time, other areas are made to appear less important by being left in darkness.

The directed light of the spotlights produces a rhythm on the thoroughfare and allows the tables to become islands of communication. Projectors illuminating the trees outside create accents. The illumination outdoors reveals the depth. In the foreground, this effect is achieved by lighting the lawn, in the middle ground by accentuating individual trees, and in the background by floodlighting the row of trees. It is this balance of ambient luminescence, focal glow and play of brilliants that results in a dedicated lighting solution.
