The second stage of Sydney Metro opened to great excitement in October 2024. Running from Chatswood on the north shore, under the world-famous harbour and out to Sydenham in the inner west, this major infrastructure development has changed the face of public transport in the city.
Gadigal, the station at the southern end of the CBD, is a relatively shallow build, sitting just 20 metres below the surface, and expected to accommodate at least 9000 passengers per day. Designed by Cox Architecture in collaboration with Foster + Partners, the station concourse and platforms encourage intuitive passenger movement.
Recessed ERCO Downlights line the walkways. The Aurecon built environment and infrastructure team were behind the lighting design, and chose the ERCO luminaire for its low glare. Opting for oval flood lenses means the number of luminaires is kept to a minimum, contributing to reduced installation and operating costs, but keeping the light output spread evenly and consistently along the spaces.
An indication of the quality of the result is the number of passengers caught stopping to capture the beauty of the architecture and light on their phones!
