“Rethink Economy” – This is the motto of the new campus for the Vienna University of Economics and Business. With buildings designed by six prestigious architectural firms, including Zaha Hadid, Peter Cooks and CRAB Studios, the university positions itself here as a cosmopolitan, innovative institute of learning. The aim of this major project with a floor space of more than 144 000 square metres was to create space for social, cultural and political interactions.
This reflects in the concept of open architecture for the cafeteria. With a view of the kitchen area, an appetising presentation of food, bar tables for a quick meal, and a café zone for more drawn-out breaks, it meets a variety of different requirements. Special focus in terms of lighting design was given to the colour of light that was to accentuate the various zones in the spacious cafeteria and create the required atmosphere. The kitchen area and serving counter, for instance, are illuminated in neutral white, whereas food presentation and the cosy Coffee Lounge are bathed in warm white light.
