Altering the brightness distribution between floor, wall and ceiling using the lighting allows either the vertical or horizontal surfaces to be emphasised. This can facilitate orientation, separate functional zones or even contribute to the creation of the spatial concept. The recessed ceiling luminaires along the wall emit an asymmetrical light distribution for a uniform brightness distribution on the vertical surfaces. The other downlights emit light symmetrically to give a wide light distribution on the floor. The spotlights additionally accentuate individual objects in order to place brightness contrasts in the vertical or horizontal plane. The wall-mounted luminaires are an option for brightening the ceiling.

The combination of vertical and horizontal illumination produces a balanced and pleasant overall impression in the room. The bright wall in the background accentuates the depth of the room. The ambient lighting provided by the downlights makes no differentiation between the seating arrangements and the floor surface.

If the groups of chairs are illuminated using accent light, however, this will produce pools of light in the room. The bright side wall creates width in the foreground and changes the focus in the room.

Vertical

The wallwashing attracts attention to the walls. The bright side walls result in a wide spatial impression. The continuation of the wallwashing on the rear wall links the foreground with the background. The uniform light distribution on the wall over its entire height and width accentuates the wall in its entirety. The result is that the room takes on an undifferentiated appearance because the light is solely coming from the wall.

Horizontal: Floor

The illumination solely on the floor as a horizontal component gives a dark overall impression of the room. A floor surface with less reflectance would accentuate this impression even more

Horizontal: Ceiling

Conversely, the indirect illumination using ceiling washlights incorporates the ceiling as an upper horizontal surface, making the room appear higher. In contrast to the illumination with downlights, the furniture is bathed in diffuse light.
